The transition from infantile to adult swallowing is gradual and occupies a long period in the ontogenetic development of swallowing. This phase is characterized by the coexistence of both infantile and adult-type swallowing acts in variable proportions, which tends to the progressive decrease of the infantile-type swallowing acts. The transition from one type of swallowing to the other should occur around 18–20 months (Schindler 1990), but around the age of 7, the copresence of the two modes of carrying out the oral phase is still considered physiological, no longer deemed acceptable with the eruption of permanent dentition. At the age of 10, 70% of subjects present a definitive adult-type swallowing pattern (Cozza et al. 2020), although some authors consider a lingual thrust swallowing physiological at this age (Hanson and Cohen 1973; Proffit and Mason 1975; Speidel et al. 1972).

摘要
