The Economy and Economic Action: A Critical Appraisal

Epistemological reflections in economics are subject to business cycles: after a depression phase, attempts increase to gain guidance by returning to the basics. Tellingly, these efforts have mainly concentrated on methodological problems: how can reliable insights be extracted from a given object of knowledge called “the economy”? However, the preceding question about the essential characteristics of economics as a subfield of social sciences has received far less attention, let alone a convincing answer.
