This chapter broadly introduces microwaves and microwave (MW) processing of different types of materials ranging from metals to insulators. A detailed comparison between the conventional method and MW processing is made in this chapter. A brief account of historical background and recent trends of MW processing is also presented. The characteristics of MW processing in different modes along with their advantages and applications in materials processing are discussed towards the end of this chapter.
