A Comparative Study on Experimental Methods of Parametric Rolling in Irregular Waves

Parametric rolling presents significant challenges to ship stability, necessitating experimental studies for safer maritime operations. ITTC recommended procedures and guidelines (2008) stated that a free-running model test with autopilot is desirable for parametric rolling, and a model experiment towed by a carriage could be an alternative. This research investigates parametric rolling behaviour through model experiments conducted in a towing tank under towed and free-running conditions. In this study, we focus on towed model experiments using elastic ropes. We performed both towed and free-running model experiments and compared the roll responses in regular and irregular waves. The findings contribute to improved experimental methodologies for assessing parametric rolling. This study offers an experimental basis for future advancements in ship stability design and control strategies, addressing the complexities of parametric rolling in real sea conditions.
