Summary of the Generic Prismatic Planing Hull Physical Scaled Model Tests

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) previously funded the United States Naval Academy (USNA) and Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWCCD) to study fluid-structure interaction (FSI) of small craft in hopes of advancing our understanding of slams and their impact on structural design and to improve existing numerical tools. The first funding for the effort was directed to the USNA in 2012 for the creation of a scaled model, and subsequent funding was provided to US Navy research organizations over a number of years, through 2020. A series of model tests was conducted on a scaled planing hull, identified as the Generic Prismatic Planing Hull (GPPH), and most of the data was made publicly releasable. This paper seeks to serve as a high-level reference for scientists and engineers interested in using the GPPH dataset, and an appropriate first-read for those who are using it for the first time. The paper summarizes the experimental work performed on GPPH to date. The authors felt that creating this type of paper would benefit the greater community given that the work was conducted over the course of many years and involved large datasets. The paper steps through the physical scaled model tests chronologically so the reader can best understand why each test was performed and how each test led into the next. The interested reader can appreciate the project holistically, reading the material presented, and can quickly determine which dataset best serves the needs of their research.
