In this paper, harms facilitated by smart homes are considered. The study aimed to provide an overview of the research area by contributing a map of smart home-facilitated harm and supporting future research. A systematic mapping study, including 48 published and peer-reviewed articles, identified eight preliminary categories of harm. These results were then presented to a focus group of nine smart home users to brainstorm additional categories, resulting in a comprehensive final map of several smart home-facilitated harms. The categories of harm identified in the study were wide-ranging, including domestic abuse, surveillance and privacy concerns, security breaches, algorithmic bias such as digital ageism, democratic risks, environmental degradation, and market monopolization by big tech companies. Suggestions for future work to address the societal and ethical implications of IoT life conclude the paper, mainly regarding smart homes but also their connection with smart cities.

摘要
