Trauma team activation is a tiered response to identify patients with potential serious injuries. The assessment is based on several factors, including physiology, anatomy, mechanism of injury (MOI), and patient risk factors. Following evaluation by emergency medical services (EMS), the decision to transport injured patients to a trauma center versus non-trauma center is influenced by the factors outlined above. On arrival, the activation of the trauma team may vary at institutions in order to optimize resource utilization while providing timely and appropriate care. The trauma team consists of a multidisciplinary team that may include surgeons, emergency medicine physicians, nurses, advanced practitioners, respiratory technicians, pharmacists, anesthesiologists, radiology technicians social workers, and others. Each team member represents a specific role in order to ensure patient safety and provide effective communication during the trauma response. From arrival on the scene to the trauma bay, every second counts to identify the patient’s injury and effectively transport patients to improve their outcomes.
