Medicinal Plants and Phytochemicals Targeting Specific Cancer Pathways and Mechanisms

As one of the biggest causes of death globally, cancer calls for the investigation of innovative treatment approaches. Medicinal plants and their phytochemicals have emerged as promising cancer therapeutic options because they interfere with the pathways and processes that produce cancer. Numerous biological activities, such as pro-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiproliferative effects, have been reported to support botanicals’ anticancer potential. Furthermore, by targeting pathways, such as AMPK/PGC-1α, PI3K/Akt/mTOR, and NF-κB, these botanicals disrupt the metabolism of cancer cells, prevent angiogenesis, limit the expression of genes linked to cancer cell growth, and induce apoptosis. They also boost the effectiveness of traditional cancer treatments by fortifying the immune responses. Adding phytochemicals to cancer treatment regimens offers a multimodal strategy that may improve medicine delivery to cancer cells and lessen adverse effects. To exploit the therapeutic potential of these medicinal plants and their constituents, future research should concentrate on clinical trials and the creation of innovative delivery systems. Thus, this chapter discusses how different botanicals and their components—such as terpenoids, alkaloids, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds—may alter important signaling pathways that contribute to cancer development.
