The structural and functional specificities of plants – sessile organisms that lack a nervous system – offer a valuable opportunity to critically reassess and broaden current research horizons regarding the type and extension of cognitive processes in the living world. By identifying the most promising epistemic and practical approaches, this perspective lays the groundwork for a more comprehensive and integrated understanding of biological cognition, with particular emphasis on ecological interactions and the inherently relational development of organisms. This work aims to initiate an interdisciplinary reflection on how ongoing studies of plant capabilities may clarify and enrich some questions in behavioral studies, cognitive science, and philosophy of mind. Additional connections are explored with research in the philosophy of science and biology, systems theory, complexity science, epistemology, and theories of knowledge. This book investigates how the study of plant behavior can generate novel lines of inquiry by reframing, from an alternative perspective, traditional questions in the cognitive domain. It is structured around 1) a historical reconstruction of relevant debates, followed by 2) an analysis of recent scientific literature on plant characteristics and abilities, and 3) concludes with a discussion of the theoretical implications across various branches of philosophical research. Such an approach may significantly contribute to the revision, or even transformation, of established conceptual frameworks, offering new insights into core notions such as perception, action, behavior, intelligence, cognition, and mind.
