The chapter provides a close reading of Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel, Fahrenheit 451, to illustrate the parallels between the formation of dead zones and the socio-political organization of the night. Drawing on Gil Doron’s formulation of dead zones, the chapter shows that dead zones are one of the dystopian outcomes of urban planning, which reveal practices of marginalization, discrimination, and colonization, and therefore have a transgressive position against urbanization. These features of dead zones correspond to nocturnal organizations. The chapter aims to highlight the transgressive significance of the night and nocturnal experiences by focusing on the transgressive aspect of nightwalking.
