Grounded on the latest research concerning the relation between writing, space, and place in the humanities, currently going under the umbrella title of Geocriticism and Spatial Literary Studies, the first part of the chapter discusses the major contributors to the field from Gaston Bachelard to Robert Tally Jr. The spatial theories mentioned form the scaffolding for the analysis of individual texts (fiction, poetry) and artistic creations (painting, architecture) that are interpreted through the lens of human geography, literary cartography, imaginary topographies, and cognitive mappings. A very short presentation of each of the subsequent chapters of the volume completes the Introduction.
