After experiencing three waves of democratisation, sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) falls in the ‘grey zone’ between democracy and autocracy, characterised by unaccountable leadership and rentier states that lock SSA into an extractive cycle of patronage, patron-clientelism, and democratic dysfunction. This chapter explores the association between democracy and economic growth, and the effects of the political resource curse before focussing on the relationship between democratisation and FDI and elections and FDI.
