Occupational irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) is an inflammatory cutaneous condition caused by skin barrier disruption by external agents found in the workplace. It is the most common form of contact dermatitis and the most common form of occupational skin disease. The diagnosis of occupational ICD can be challenging, as there is currently no confirmatory test and it is often a diagnosis of exclusion, especially after allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) has been ruled out with patch testing. Early recognition, secondary prevention, and treatment allowing skin barrier repair are the mainstays of management. The purpose of this article is to provide a comprehensive review with regard to the risk factors, clinical features, diagnosis and management of occupational ICD.
