This chapter analyses, from a centre–periphery perspective, the territorial assets of the main early medieval monasteries of the counties of PallarsPallars and RibagorçaRibagorça between the ninth and tenth centuries. During the first two centuries of their existence, these abbeys—defined here as the centres—acquired extensive properties not only in their immediate surroundings but also in more distant and apparently unconnected locations—the peripheries. It has often been assumed that these more remote acquisitions were accidental, the result of unforeseen donations, and of minor significance. In this chapter, however, we demonstrate that many of these assets were deliberately acquired by the monasteries, suggesting that they sought resources unavailable in their immediate vicinity. In doing so, we reconsider the relationship between the monastic centres and their peripheral possessions, the real economic and social complexity of the early medieval monastic estates, and the systems necessarily developed for their effective management.
