This paper explores new directions for studying the medieval diocese by analysing the role of church consecration inscriptions, which could have been central to the construction and reaffirmation of the jurisdictional power of bishops. Therefore, in the first part of the paper, we explain de concept “territoriality” applied to the study of medieval dioceses. In the second part, we analyse a case study based on the inscriptions of the diocese of BurgosBurgos, a major player in the promotion of these inscriptions. Finally, we reflect on the relationship between the central see and the inscriptions located in its periphery.

摘要

This paper explores new directions for studying the medieval diocese by analysing the role of church consecration inscriptions, which could have been central to the construction and reaffirmation of the jurisdictional power of bishops. Therefore, in the first part of the paper, we explain de concept “territoriality” applied to the study of medieval dioceses. In the second part, we analyse a case study based on the inscriptions of the diocese of BurgosBurgos, a major player in the promotion of these inscriptions. Finally, we reflect on the relationship between the central see and the inscriptions located in its periphery.
