In the framework of this volume dedicated to centers and peripheries in the medieval world, this chapter explores how medieval epigraphy can contribute to a complex understanding of places, spaces and circulations in the Middle Ages. This includes real and geographical spaces, of course, but also intellectual spaces, places of exchange of knowledge, crossroads between human and non-human behaviors, relations of power between those who control the use of writing and impose its norms in manuscripts and documents, and those who act on public spaces through epigraphic writing. To provide some provisional insights on this question, this chapter addresses three topics: first, the phenomena of “circulation” of and within inscriptions; second, the notion of epigraphic “frontier”; and finally, the possibility of using the notion of “margin” to describe the uses of inscriptions during the Middle Ages.
