Being Challenged as a Satisfying Experience: The Joy of Singing (Sendai)
摘要
Tanabata (pseudonym) is a mixed chorus group active in Wakabayashi-ward of Sendai city in Japan. Sendai city is prefectural seat of Miyagi, located in the northeastern center of Japan. It has a population of one million and is the political and economic center of Japan’s northeastern region. The choral group was founded in 1993. Wakabayashi-ward faces the Pacific Ocean, and there are some areas that were seriously damaged by seismic waves in the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. As a result of a survey, observations, and interviews with the group, we found that the group members were happy with the situation and environment in which they were able to participate, that their personalities were related to their participation, that there were benefits in participating, and that these were linked to an improvement in quality of life. After March 2020, practice was suspended due to the pandemic, but due to the strong demand of the members, as of October 2022, practice was gradually resumed while taking sufficient precautions to prevent droplet infection.
