This chapter grants the opportunity to recognize and comprehend visual depictions of Manila’s Spanish colonial-era urban environment after the commencement of American colonial rule in 1898. As will be subsequently explained, early-American colonial-era photographic postcards show the Philippine capital city to be an urban place dissimilar to cities in contemporary North America; urban environmental divergence in this context reveals the alleged “backwardness” of Philippine civilization and the lack of modernity in the Philippine capital city.
