One of the most salient characteristics of autism is social communication differences, which often contribute to an autistic individual’s ability to develop close, meaningful relationships. Although challenges exist for many, social skills programs (SSP) exist to help autistic and neurotypical individuals who choose to engage in them learn social skills to develop and deepen relationships. SSP have consistently been shown to benefit those who choose to participate by utilizing a variety of cognitive and behavioral methods, including skills practice, direct instruction, feedback, and praise. This chapter synthesizes the literature base surrounding socialization in autism, as well as highlighting specific evidence-based SSP. Implications and suggestions for future research into SSP are also considered.
