This chapter reviews historical developments that have influenced autism conceptualization and treatment since the early 1940s when Leo Kanner first identified early infantile autism. Topics covered include the evolution of etiological beliefs and societal views, early to current treatment practices, and major scientific contributions and policy developments that have shaped current treatment practices in the United States. Interventions with the most rigorous evidence base (e.g., those utilizing principles of Applied Behavior Analysis) are emphasized as well as treatment approaches with emerging evidence of applicability for specific core or co-occurring conditions (e.g., mental health symptoms) across the lifespan.
