The artwork Binary Citizen supports this chapter and its considerations of how perceptions of difference have been subsumed and transformed into a global, digital system. This work follows At’Onement INCorporeal, where I consider the embodied and affective impacts of managerialism and increasing digitisation. As my life became increasingly connected to computers and typing, I found that I had less and less time to draw and write in a journal. I could feel a difference in my hands between typing and moving a pen, pencil, or other mark-making tools. I began to wonder about how the hand is connected to patterns of thinking, particularly alongside what was happening with the repetitive tap, tap motion of typing. This took me into studying the origins of binary code. I learnt about drumming, lace making, industrial weaving, and the advent of digital coding language—ASCII. I came across neurologist Frank Wilson’s comprehensive research survey on the hand. I learnt how the hands are poly-sensory, more diversely represented in the brain than any other organ, and how hands form before the brain in utero (Figs. 12.1, 12.2, 12.3, 12.4, 12.5, 12.6, 12.7, 12.8 and 12.9).
