Since mechanical ventilation is associated with diaphragm dysfunction and difficulties in ventilator weaning, the importance of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) has become increasingly evident over the years. It is well established that specific respiratory exercises lead to functional improvements in hospitalized and critically ill patients undergoing mechanical ventilation. Researchers have studied various protocols and devices, and IMT has been shown to increase respiratory muscle strength, weaning success, and survival rates in mechanically ventilated patients. Although it remains uncertain when, how, and how often IMT should be performed, its importance and impact are well recognized, and it is known to be both safe and feasible.
