Smart city development and the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) show a perfect relationship to serve as a key to sustainable city development. Smart cities deal with the utilization of technological improvements to increase the comfort and effective use of the available resources for the benefit of the city. In this chapter, we discussed the awareness of the incorporation of smart cities in enhancing the achievement of the goals set by the UN-SDGs. Wireless technologies and big data allow the collection of reliable and up-to-date data, improving the efficiency of city management. Also, technological management in smart cities largely deals with the application of Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, and Big Data for better quality of life of civil structures and systems with the alignment of SDGs such as affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, and climate change. They offer a clear approach to meeting global challenges such as poverty, unfair distribution of resources, and environmental destruction. Particularly in relation to these goals, the approaches that are adopted by smart cities can be further defined. The goal of sustainable developments in smart cities includes inclusion for all in the urban environment, improvement of climate change, and better utilization of resources. By adopting smart city initiatives that are aligned with the SDG goals, it is possible for cities to achieve sustainable economic, social, and environmental development. Conclusively, the combination of smart cities and SDGs has the potential to envision sustainable living environments of the future.
