Building Information Modeling as a Pedagogical Tool for Introducing Structure to Architecture Students

Understanding the fundamentals of structure is key to architectural design. Therefore, every architecture curriculum must cover this subject. This paper discusses both the tool and the details of using BIM technology to introduce aspects of the subject to architecture students in their third year of study. The paper explains the context, the rationale, the process, the advantages, and the disadvantages of using the technology in comparison to other pedagogical tools to address the same aspects. A special focus is on integrating structural elements with architectural design. The paper also provides details on managing BIM technology for the intended purpose, so other instructors may build on the experience and develop it further for their specific pedagogical environment. Feedback from students on the learning experience is shared and analyzed.
