This chapter explores the concept of identity, from the limitations of its dictionary definitions to multifaceted aspects of its academic contextualization. It differentiates between social and personal identity, drawing on theories like symbolic interactionism, structural symbolic interactionism, social constructionism, and performativity. The chapter then narrows down focus on the conceptualization of the subaltern and how specifically the subaltern identity centers around the binary categories of gender and religion. Finally, it demonstrates, how the Nat as a community, often deprived of narrative agency amidst the historical, sociocultural, political, economic landscape of India, can be considered subaltern.
