Inner Mongolia grassland pastoral area has a cold climate, year-round windy and snowy winter, settlements are highly dispersed, and the mode of production is based on animal husbandry, so the settlement's prevention and control of wind and snow, cold-proofing of buildings, and energy supply have been the key problems to be solved for a long time. The purpose of this paper is to take the typical herder settlements in the pastoral areas of the Inner Mongolian steppe as the research object, and to explore the renovation strategy of the settlements in the context of sustainability, with regard to the characteristics of climate, resources, and the needs of contemporary herders' life and production. A typical settlement in Siziwang Banner, Ulanqab City, Inner Mongolia, was selected as the carrier for the study. Through on-site research and actual data measurement in the settlement, computer simulation and other methods, the study explored and researched the prevention and control of snow and wind outdoors, the improvement of the indoor physical environment of the residential buildings, and the application of wind and light resources in the settlement. Through the research, a set of sustainable renovation system of settlements that can be adapted to the unique geography and climate of Inner Mongolia's grassland pastoral areas is explored. The research results are of great significance in promoting energy conservation and carbon reduction in grassland pastoral areas, improving the living and production environment of herders, and promoting the sustainable development of pastoral areas.
