The Impact of Evening Room Lighting on the Alertness, Melatonin Secretion and Sleep Quality of Chinese Elderly: A High-Fidelity Laboratory Study

Background: The level of indoor lighting environment is directly related to the health of the sleep of older adults, and the evening lighting period is a critical window for light exposure among the Chinese elderly. Methods: This study conducted a pre-sleep lighting experiment in 27 older adults, investigating the effects of different levels of mel-EDI values (1 lx, 10 lx, 100 lx) and “the same mel-EDI but different SPD (CCT = 2800 K, 6000 K)” on subjective alertness, melatonin secretion, and sleep parameters in older adults. Conclusions:1) Light exerts nonvisual effects in older adults through multiple pathways and mechanisms; 2) m-EDI illuminance thresholds that trigger changes in subjective alertness, melatonin secretion, and sleep parameters vary among older adults; 3) The average time for DLMO (Dim Light Melatonin Onset) for elderly participants was 21:28 (SD = 63.9 min). The average DLMO for women (21:20, SD = 56.9) was 71 min later than that of men (20:09, SD = 68.1) (p < 0.001), and females exhibited longer sleep latency; 4) In-home sleep monitoring for older adults, sleep mattresses can serve as an effective tool for sleep evaluation. Discussion: Noninvasive sleep monitoring devices are an important approach for future research on sleep in older adults, while salivary melatonin measurement has limitations for this population.
