Research on Urban Network Traffic Status with New Energy Vehicles Under Low-Carbon Demand: MFD Perspective

With increasing demand of low-carbon travel, new energy vehicles (NEVs) are accounting for a growing proportion of urban road networks. The traffic flow characteristics formed by NEVs differ from those of traditional vehicles, leading to corresponding different network traffic status. To evaluate the output level of network traffic flow and the performance of urban networks dominated by NEV traffic, it is necessary to analyze the characteristic values embodied when traffic flow with NEV characteristics couples with the road network. As a fundamental attribute of road networks, this paper selects the Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (MFD) model as the evaluation method for road network status under regional-specific traffic flow conditions. Four evaluation indicators are established: maximum weighted flow of the network, optimal cumulative vehicles, road network capacity and traffic flow distribution equilibrium. These indicators are used to compare the performance of road network status under traditional and NEV traffic flows. Taking 37 signalized intersections around Taisheng South Road in Qingyang District, Chengdu, as the network case, the MFD attribution and fitting line of the network under traditional and NEV traffic flows are obtained using simulation under VISSIM secondary development technology. By comparing the MFD characteristics and evaluation indicators, the corresponding differences are analyzed. The advantages brought by NEVs as low-carbon travel tools to urban road network traffic are discussed.
