Renal Disease and Neural Circuits: Brain-Kidney Crosstalk

Acute and chronic kidney diseases have profound effects on multiple organ systems, including the central nervous system (CNS). Emerging evidence highlights a bidirectional interaction between the brain and kidneys, mediated by neural circuits, humoral factors, and inflammatory pathways. This review explores the mechanisms underlying brain-kidney crosstalk, focusing on autonomic dysregulation, neuroinflammation, and shared pathophysiological pathways in acute kidney injury (AKI) and acute brain injury (ABI). Understanding these interactions is crucial for developing neuroprotective and reno-protective strategies in critically ill patients.
