Mapping and Threat Assessment of Invasive Alien Plants in Urban Ecosystem

The emergence and dispersion of Invasive Alien Plant Species (IAPS) in the vicinity of metropolitan environments endanger biodiversity, ecological health, and their services. Due to numerous environmental factors and higher propagation pressure, invasive or non-native species tend to be more prevalent in metropolitan regions than the countryside. For the sustainable management of IAPS in urban ecosystems, the importance of integrated trans-disciplinary research is stressed. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote sensing are tools for evaluating, mapping as well as tracking the IAPS spread and linking to the management of the IAPS habitat. Spatial prioritization techniques such as Species Distribution Modeling (SDM) create predictive models of invasive species distribution based on environmental elements such as climate, topography, and land use change, identifying areas at the highest risk of invasion. Similarly, multi-criteria decision analyses in a GIS (Geographical Information System) establish a strategic, spatial prioritization technique to recognize those places most vulnerable to terrestrial alien species invasions. System for Conservation Planning (SCP) software tool that helps prioritize areas for conservation efforts, including invasive species management. One of the most widely used tools for spatial conservation planning and management, including invasive species control, is Marxan. Similarly, Prioritizr (the R package) can be used to prioritize conservation activities based on their spatial location. Invasive species management initiatives attempt to reduce the impact of invasive species on natural habitats while promoting the health of native plants and wildlife. So, it is crucial to identify their existing dispersion and project future expansion, which is critical for successful management and mitigation strategies.
