The reduction of near-ground wind speed by design windbreaks was modeled based on long-term wind statistics derived from on-site wind measurements and reanalysis data for different planning purposes. In the high wind energy environment of the Western Cape West Coast Peninsula near Yzerfontein, windbreak planning should significantly reduce wind speeds within a farm enclosure for ostriches susceptible to wind chill stress. The model results for three hedgerows (Populus or comparable, height 10 m, width 6 m, length 250 m, spacing 100 m) indicate an overall reduction of wind speed of 45% for the lee zone behind a windbreak and in the middle about 50 m behind it. The results imply that the relatively small invest in 750 running meters of hedgerow planting covering 0.5% of the enclosure creates a comfort zone of 2.5% of the enclosure area which should be sufficient for the entire ostrich stock.
