This book examines emotions in the contemporary era. Contemporary archaeology is the study of the recent past, whose subjects may still be alive and are contemporaneous with the archaeologist’s work. The Cold War is an example of a time period of interest to contemporary archaeology, when collective feelings, especially fear, were amplified. The working-class neighbourhood called Vaakunakylä in Oulu, Finland, is introduced as a context for the study of these collective feelings. An archaeological study of emotion in the contemporary era can be useful in itself, but it can also offer insight into the examination of emotions in the deep past.
