This chapter introduces the book’s central inquiry: the adaptation of novels into theatrical performances through a translation studies perspective. It argues that novel to stage adaptations occupy a unique space at the intersection of translation studies, adaptation studies, and theatre studies, necessitating an interdisciplinary approach. Adaptation is framed as both an intersemiotic and intermedial negotiation, extending beyond textual transformation to a socially embedded practice. The study addresses a gap in adaptation scholarship by proposing a dual-lens model that examines both the semiotic shifts within adaptations and the sociocultural forces shaping their production and reception.
