The importance of writing for learning and identity development makes it a valuable tool for fostering empathetic skills, critical thinking, and ethical citizenship across diverse educational contexts, including university settings where Portuguese is taught as a non-native language. To this end, we need a robust approach to teaching writing in a second language drawing upon multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks that capture the intricate nature of writing, encompassing cognitive, social, and personal dimensions. We will present pedagogical projects focusing on producing various text genres for authentic readers, including children in Portuguese-speaking regions. Guided by continuous monitoring of the writing process, these projects assist students from planning to revision, emphasizing the development of communicative and intercultural competencies. Spanning the academic year, these initiatives thrive on sustained collaboration among diverse institutions and partners across Lusophone countries. Our approach also harmonizes European and Brazilian Portuguese norms while nurturing a “literary and creative voice” in students. We aim to tackle challenges like navigating language norms in writing and leveraging literary exploration and cultural inquiry to enrich L2 creative writing. Our objective is to foster transformative learning, advancing more enlightened local and global communities.
