This is a book about a fundamental, ubiquitous technology, some form of which has, by definition, been around since the earliest recorded history, and which many of us use everyday and take for granted: written language and the tools used to write it. It is a class of technology whose common-use scenarios have changed dramatically over recent decades, so that many of us write every day in circumstances and mediums we would not have written in even just 25 years ago: on the bus, on a mobile phone even (unfortunately) while walking. Writing was once the province of specialists (scribes), but literacy rates are now high worldwide and barriers to written communication have never been lower.
