Yet screen time has dramatically reduced both social interaction and active play, creating increasingly sedentary lifestyles with documented negative health outcomes. The chapter highlights the therapeutic benefits of nature exposure, drawing on concepts like Attention Restoration Theory, Stress Recovery Theory, and biophilia to demonstrate how natural environments support mental health and cognitive functioning. Research shows that access to nature correlates with improved mental health outcomes, while time in challenging outdoor environments develops crucial competence and autonomy. The authors argue that modern “safetyism” has contributed to children’s increased screen dependence by limiting outdoor exploration. They recommend delaying device access until age 16, modelling healthy technology use, and creating boundaries that shift the balance towards real-world experiences, particularly in nature, to buffer against the negative impacts of excessive screen time on developing brains.
