Cervical cancer is preventable. Yet the disease continues to wreak havoc– cervical cancer ranked as the fourth leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide – resulting in approximately 604,000 new cases and 342,000 deaths across the globe. Recurring evidence shows that over 90% of cervical cancer cases are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, which could be effectively prevented by timely HPV vaccination. However, the global HPV vaccination momentum has been plagued by compounding factors such as suboptimal systematic interventions as well as the public’s lack of awareness and poor adoption of HPV vaccination. To further complicate the situation, the pandemic, along with the growing controversies and confusion surrounding COVID-19 vaccines, may have further compromised the global HPV vaccination initiative. However, to date, there is a dearth of studies that examined how these compounding four factors shape the global HPV vaccination progress. Thus, to bridge the research gap, this chapter investigates the state of global HPV vaccination in light of the challenges and opportunities it faces amid and beyond COVID-19 and discusses practical solutions that could further advance HPV vaccines’ pivotal role in cervical cancer prevention and elimination across the globe.
