The Role of Checkpoint Inhibitors in the Treatment of Glioma and Meningioma

Glioma and meningioma are the most prevalent primary brain tumors and are considered as brain cancers with poor prognosis. Understanding the molecular pathogenesis of brain tumors has resulted in considerable improvements in the diagnosis and therapeutic strategies that offer potential for more proper outcomes. Many studies suggested that tumoral cells are potent in escaping the immune system, which can result in uncontrolled malignant growth. One of the processes for this immune suppression by tumors is the exploitation of inhibitory or activating pathways in the immune system to limit the antitumor immune responses. Accordingly, it was discovered that by utilizing immunotherapies, we can target specific molecules that are responsible for the limitation of the roles of the immune system in confronting tumoral cells and restore the antitumor immune response. The role of immune checkpoint modulators in the treatment of several advanced cancers has been demonstrated. In this chapter, we aimed to review the literature on the role of immune checkpoint inhibitors in glioma and meningioma.
