Peripheral nerves have recently gained attention in cancer research due to their demonstrated ability to modify tumor microenvironment (TME) and cancer progression. Nerve-released neurotransmitters and neurotrophic factors bestow a nourishing milieu for the cancer cells and stromal cells in the TME. Nerves also support cancer cell dissemination by promoting perineural invasion, in which cancer cells use nerves as tissue scaffolds for efficient migration. In addition, peripheral nerves modify the immune milieu in solid tumors. The immune cells in the TME express specific receptors for the nerve-released factors making the communication possible between nerves and immune cells. The resulting crosstalk has a variety of consequences depending upon the type of nerve and immune cell involvement. This chapter discusses the neurosignaling in immune cells and its implications for cancer progression. Specific emphasis is given to sympathetic, parasympathetic, and sensory neurosignaling in immune cells in both cancer and non-cancer settings to understand the universal nature of the neuroimmune crosstalk and its implications in cancer progression.
