Metastasis to the lymphatic system is a significant concern for cancer patients, and underlying mechanisms are yet to be discovered. Lymphatic metastasis is a significant prognostic factor and is mainly associated with poor survival. Some cancer types such as lung cancer, breast cancer, and merkel cell carcinoma are frequently linked to lymphatic metastasis. Lymph nodes can wipe out small amounts of tumor cells. However, growth hormones released from malignant cells induce lymphangiogenesis. Several molecular markers specific to lymphatic endothelial cells such as VEGF, Prox-1, and podoplanin are crucial for understanding metastasis to lymphatics. Early diagnosis of lymphatic metastasis and therapeutic approaches to prevent lymph node metastasis are fundamental to sustain a better prognosis in oncology wards.
