Metastasis Inhibition in Cancer

Metastasis is the hallmark of cancer that accounts for the vast majority of cancer-related deaths. Despite its pivotal role, our understanding of this critical aspect of cancer biology remains limited. This complex process comprises a series of stages known as the “metastatic cascade.” To successfully inhibit metastasis and prevent cancer recurrence, a thorough comprehension of each step in the metastatic progression is imperative. The ever-evolving landscape of cancer biology research has revealed some of the molecular foundations that drive this disseminating process. Nevertheless, there has been a relative absence of successful therapeutic strategies specifically designed to target metastasis. This chapter provides an overview of the metastasis process and summarizes the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the dissemination of tumor cells. Additionally, recent advances in anti-metastatic strategies and drug development in pre-clinical and clinical trials are presented. The current challenges and prospective in metastasis inhibition in cancer are also discussed.
