The global population has surpassed 8 billion, with projections that 70% will reside in urban areas by 2050. The unchecked urbanization and unsustainable development practices are leading to significant land degradation and contributing to climate change. Development actors often focus on enhancing infrastructure to accommodate the growing urban population, which unintentionally intensifies land degradation. Despite the importance of this issue, the land degradation and climate change nexus is rarely explored. To address this gap, this chapter investigates development actions contributing to land degradation, the connection between land degradation and climate change, the associated challenges, and potential measures to combat land degradation. A mixed research design was employed, using both qualitative and quantitative methods. A total of 200 questionnaires were distributed using purposive sampling techniques, supplemented by structured interviews and focus group discussions to further explore the connections. The findings reveal that intensified human activities and changing consumption patterns significantly contribute to land degradation. Additionally, there is a notable relationship between ecological dynamics—evidenced by the loss of forests and wetlands—and seasonal as well as inter-annual climate variability, which leads to reduced water availability and agricultural productivity. The chapter recommends rigorous monitoring of human activities and encourages a shift toward sustainable practices. It advocates for promoting green consumption and green agriculture, implementing landscape restoration initiatives (such as planting fruit trees in residential areas), and establishing buffer zones around wetlands to mitigate climate change and environmental degradation.
