Wetland Dynamics-Changing Climate Nexus: Between Conservation and Livelihoods Sustainability in the Ndop Plain, Cameroon

Wetlands are vital ecosystems that regulate climate and provide essential resources and services to riverine communities. This chapter aims to explore the nexus between climate change and wetland resource dynamics and how conservation efforts can improve the livelihoods of local populations. Data was collected from both secondary and primary sources using a mixed-methods approach. The rainfall anomaly index indicates a declining trend in rainfall over the past three decades, accompanied by an increase in extreme weather events. Additionally, the normalized difference water index (NDWI), groundwater potential index (GWPI), and a change detection model show a reduction in floodplains, shrinking underground aquifers, and changes in land use that negatively affect wetlands in the Ndop Plain. Between 2001 and 2020, surface and groundwater potentials decreased by more than 30%, with a significant reduction in wetland vegetation. Understanding the dynamics and the climate-regulating functions of wetlands is crucial for conservation efforts and sustainable livelihoods.
