This chapter situates NASCAR within a cultural geography of whiteness, tracing the sport’s historical formation and its embeddedness within Southern identity and White hegemonic values. Drawing from academic fields like cultural geography and sport sociology, the chapter interrogates how NASCAR functions as a raced space, where spatial practices, cultural narratives, and institutional norms reproduce whiteness as normative. The chapter establishes a theoretical foundation for the study, engaging with the complexity of theorizing blackness within predominantly White institutions. It emphasizes the need for spatialized understandings of race and explores how space itself becomes a site of racial meaning-making and control. This framing sets the stage for a grounded analysis of how Black fans navigate and reinterpret their presence within the White-dominant landscapes of NASCAR.
