The Effect of International Regulations and European Green Deal on Turkish Aviation Sector from a Legal Perspective

This research reviews the contributions of European Green Deal and acquis communautaire to decarbonization targets in Turkish aviation sector. As the methodology of the research, a detailed and comparative analysis was made by reviewing the legal documents both in the European Union law and Turkish law, international agreements and official statistical data. The main question is that whether the regulations in Turkish law regarding decarbonising Turkish aviation sector are compatible with the targets included in the European Green Deal. Therefore the paper, considered by the author, will contribute to the literature by delving into the recent developments. The research consists of two sections. In the first section the legal regulations regarding the decarbonisation of the activities in aviation sector in European Union law are reviewed. The second section delves into the effect of these regulations and international regulations on the decarbonisation of Turkish aviation sector. In this context, promoting sustainable aviation fuels, green airline projects and creating zero emission aircrafts were decided as targets for complying with the acquis communautaire and fulfilling the international commitments in Turkish law. As the outcome of the research, it was found out that the international regulations and European Green Deal have an effect on establishment of legal regulations and policies for the decarbonisation efforts in Turkish aviation.
