Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common heart rhythm problem with prevalence increasing with age. One of the most serious complications of AF is stroke, often caused by sluggish blood flow. Sluggish blood flow from ineffective heart contractions can lead to blood clots, most commonly in the left atrial appendage (LAA). To reduce stroke risk, patients are treated with long-term blood thinners or LAA occlusion devices, such as the Watchman or Amplatzer Amulet, in those who cannot tolerate medications. These devices are inserted through a vein in the groin and placed in the LAA to prevent clot formation. They have been shown to be as effective as blood thinners in stroke prevention while significantly reducing bleeding risk.
