Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) is a hands-on approach that is used by osteopathic physicians who are specially trained to treat musculoskeletal dysfunctions. The goal of OMM is to improve a patient’s overall well-being by balancing the nervous system and improving circulation, lymphatic drainage, and mobility. Preliminary studies, including a randomized trial led by coauthor Dr. Todd Cohen, have found that OMM is safe for patients with cardiac implantable devices and, in particular, improved daily activities and pain without significant adverse effects. OMM should not interfere with any cardiac treatments, and patients are encouraged to inform their cardiologists if receiving OMM therapy.
