Microfinance as a Catalyst for Women’s Empowerment: A Case Study of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India
摘要
This paper investigates the role of microfinance in empowering women and alleviating poverty in Uttar Pradesh (UP), India, using Lucknow as a case study. Through an ethnographic approach and in-depth interviews, the study explores both the potential and limitations of microfinance initiatives in fostering women’s empowerment. Findings reveal that while microfinance enhances financial access, it often falls short in addressing broader empowerment challenges due to issues like limited training, low financial literacy, and diversion of funds. The study underscores the need for integrated support beyond financial services, advocating for capacity-building programs, skills training, and market access to ensure microfinance reaches its full potential. Policy frameworks such as the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme highlight the importance of institutional support and government involvement in achieving sustainable outcomes. Key success factors identified include gender-sensitive policy design, community engagement, and sustainable models that enhance microfinance’s influence in the lives of women. Holistic evaluation and innovative program designs are recommended to amplify microfinance’s impact on women’s empowerment and inclusive development. Addressing policy and institutional gaps, the study promotes collaborative efforts to unlock microfinance’s potential for long-term social and economic transformation in UP and similar regions, calling for comprehensive strategies that foster economic resilience, social progress, and community well-being.
