To foster a safe and sustainable growth and the use of autonomous aerial vehicles in urban areas, it is essential that we develop and implement effective and well-considered regulations at the European level. Several projects have been formed for completing successful integration of drones into the air traffic system, and one of them is U-space project for the EU level. The regulations about “drones” are continuously improving, and this paper explores the potential of integrating unmanned aircraft systems/unmanned aerial vehicles (UASs/UAVs) into the European airspace, highlighting the benefits and challenges of this integration. This paper will show the potential and possibilities of integrating the autonomous aerial vehicles into the classic air traffic system to create solutions for smart cities.
