This chapter shows how Bosman’s charmed world brings out not only the sense of aspects of the world but the sense or meaning of sense itself in its own right as sense. The degree of unreality of Bosman’s stories and their humorous illogic let us appreciate something about the sense of the world of reality. But this itself, further, means that nonsense and sense can interact with each other in a way that enhances sense. This is a palpable part of the delight we experience in enjoying his stories, and it is therefore an insight we at least implicitly recognize. This insight tells us something more about the nature of sense. For example, the constructive interaction of sense and nonsense in Bosman’s storytelling brings out the mysterious and interesting character of sense itself in this respect, and so brings out part of sense’s own meaningfulness just in being sense. In addition, this constructive interaction gives us a context for understanding, and so for making a kind of sense of, the illogic so frequent in real human life. In this way, it also shows us something about the nature of sense as reaching beyond itself.
